    • Major Carpendale M.C. was the son of Mrs Ellen Carpendale of Sydenham Villas, Bray, Co. Wicklow and the late Colonel Montague Maxwell Carpendale.

      Major Maxwell Montague Carpendale of the 36th Jacob's Horse Regiment (Acting Lieutenant Colonel). Son of Mrs. Ellen Carpendale of Sydenham Villas, Bray, Co. Wicklow and the late Colonel Montague Maxwell Carpendale, also of the 36th Jacob's horse; husband of Catherine Carleton Carpendale. Born 12 July 1883 in Mussorie, India. 1901 census: he was a boarder, age 17, at Great Armwell, Herts. He was first commissioned on 27 August 1902 and promoted to captain on 27 August 1911. The 36th Jacob's Horse was an Indian Cavalry Regiment. In the 1911 census he was staying at Shankill, Rathmichael, Dublin with his parents. In September 1911 the Cheltenham Looker-On reported that ?The Marriage arranged between Miss Catherine Carleton (Cooie) Fry and Captain Maxwell M. Carpendale, 36th Jacob's Horse, Ambala, will shortly take place in India from the residence of Miss Fry's uncle, Brigadier-General C. I. Fry, at Belgaum.? Awarded the Military Cross in July 1916. He died of malaria whilst on active service in Damascus on 14 October 1918 aged 35. Burial: Damascus Commonwealth War Cemetery, Dimashq, Syria, Plot: A. 18. He left effects of £963.
