Notes - 99221 (4039) Gunner Albert Berry Hodder of 266 Siege Battery, the Royal Garrison Artillery. Son of Ann Hodder (widow). Born in Salcombe in 1887. In the 1901 census he was living at 7, Thorning St. Salcombe with his mother Ann, already a widow. In the 1911 census he is living with his mother at 6, Jubilee Terrace, Salcombe and is an assistant butcher. He married Beatrice Mary Terrell in November 1911. On 29 November 1915 he enlisted at Newton Abbot. His address then was 6, Thorning St., Salcombe, he was 28 and his trade was butcher. He remained on home service until 17 Feb 1917 when he embarked at Portsmouth for Havre. Killed in action 20 April 1917 aged 30. France and Flanders theatre ? probably the Battle of Arras. Burial: Arras Memorial, Faubourg-d'Amiens Cemetery, Arras, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, Plot: Bay 1. His comrade Gunner Edward James Penny (see below) was killed on the same day and is also commemorated in Bay 1 of the Arras Memorial. Albert Hodder?s wife Beatrice was awarded a pension of 13s 9d a week in November 1917. She moved to London after his death and gave birth to his daughter Violet in December 1917. By 1919 she had returned to Devon and was living at Bellevue House, Westville, Kingsbridge.
