    • Maurice was in the 68th Field battalion of the Royal Engineers.
      Service number: 41941 Rank:Pioneer.
      He is remembered along with his Brother Thomas on the Salcombe War Memorial.

      41941 Pioneer Maurice Henry Dare of the 68th Field Company, the Royal Engineers. Son of Edwin and Isabella Dare; brother of Thomas (below). Born in Salcombe in 1893. 1911 census: boatman living with parents at 24 Fore Street, Salcombe. Enlisted at Exeter. Killed in action at Gallipoli on 15 August 1915 aged 22. Buried in Green Hill Cemetery, Suvla, Gallipoli
      68th Field Company, The Royal Engineers served with 11th (Northern) Division. 11th (Northern) Division was formed in August 1914 as part of Kitchener's First New Army. The Engineers trained at Newark before joining the rest of the Division on the 4th of April 1915 at Witley and Frensham for final training. They sailed for Gallipoli from Liverpool via Mudros at the end of June 1915. They landed near Lala Baba at Suvla Bay on the 6th and 7th of August. On the 19th and 20th of December 1915 the Division was withdrawn from Gallipoli, moving to Imbros then to Egypt at the end of January.
