Enlisted at Exeter. Residence Salcombe. Died of wounds on 4 October 1917 aged 23. Awarded the Military Medal. Theatre: France and Flanders. The 9th (Service) Battalion was part of 20th Brigade, 7th Division which fought at the Battle of Broodseinde on 4 October 1917 (a phase of the Third Battle of Ypres). Burial: Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinge, West Flanders (West-Vlaanderen), Belgium Plot XX. F.12A

Information from descendant Chris Russell:
On the Salcombe Memorial Cross is a relative of mine in the name F.G Youlden. His ship capsized after being torpedoed. His name also appears on the Merchant Navy memorial near the Tower of London and I have visited this site.
