Notes - Notes for WILLIAM THORNING:
William was a sailmaker and shopkeeper, up until recently his sail loft could still be seen, this has since been developed. Mystery surrounds his death, 1886 is given as the last time he was seen. Story has it that he drowned in Salcombe harbour but no official records of his death exist.
Note; Royal Humane Society Awards details in the Times newspaper 1801 to 1852. 20th December 1832. "Francis Higginson, Chief mate on the revenue cutter Lion, saved the life of William Thorning at Salcombe Harbour, Thorning had fallen over board and would have drowned if it wasn't for the heroic action of Higginson." For this he was awarded the Royal Humane Medal.
