- In 1883 James was in the Devonshire Artillery Volunteers.
In 1891 James, Mary, Agnes and Ethel were living at 13 Union St Salcombe. James' Occupation was Gardener.
In the 1911 Census They were living at 14 Church St. He was a Gardener (Domestic) Employed by a Medical Man.

From "Salcombe Harbour remembered" pg.28 "Fisherman's Cove, formerly Stony Cove or Higher Passage Way, was the landing place for the flat-bottomed horse and cattle ferry. Doctor Vincent Twining and his coachman "Doctor" Jimmy Putt, with his pony and trap, used this ferry to cross the harbour to visit patients at Portlemouth."
