- George Cornish (b. 1831) arrived in Victoria with his brother. They either signed off from their ship (or, as family tradition has it, jumped ship) and started mining for gold in the Amherst area. Like his brother (and many others) he did not make his fortune. He later worked for the Victorian State railway at Maryborough, where he lived at Burke Street until his death in 1896. His first marriage is not registered and may well have been ?in common law?. Sarah Jane Barrett was born in 1833 in Newbridge, County Kildare, Ireland, and she was the daughter of an English Army Captain. She died in Maryborough on 11 January 1889. His second wife, Bithya, was born on 6 July in Maryborough. She died on 25 January 1904 at Geelong and there were no children from that marriage.
