    • In 1883 John was a member of the Devonshire Artillery Volunteer brigade.
      In 1881 John was living in Courtenay St and was a stone mason and carpenter.
      In the Kelly's directory of 1893 John was an ornamental mason and sub- postmaster.
      In 1901 John was Post master and Monumental Mason living in Fore St. John's 18 year old Daughter Elsie was Post Office assistant.
      In the 1911 census he was living at 4 Church St and was a Widower living with his son Frank and Daughter in law Mary Helen. He was a lawyers clerk and steamship company agent.
