    • Salcombe is sometimes visited by invalids who generally experience the good effects of its salubrious Manor air The manor belongs to lord viscount Courtenay whose steward holds a court leet and court baron here and appoints the constables Many of the houses however are freehold paying a chief rent to The viscount.
      Inns Here are three decent inns the Turk's head and the King's Arms in the lower street the former kept by Mr William Watkins and the latter by Mr James Dawe and the Union in Valentine's place held by Mr Richard Trinnick The harbor is safe though Inner narrow And the depth of water on the bar seldom of Jess than ten feet at ebb tide though there are strange on bar reports and even some within memory of the bar having been seen near dry at low water One of these ridiculous rumors was confidently circulated so recently As the year 1812 when the ebb was said to be low on Sunday the 15th day of March that the man walked almost from one extremity to the other and that was in part Uncovered It turned out to Barnes Of gross falsehood From this bar sand is dredged sand Up ancj carr ed Jn barges to various parts of the shores of the Estuary for manure Such was the practice in husbandry formerly that many persons recollect to have numbered thirtytwo of these Barges on the bar at eleven in the years 1775 6 8c 7 At present however rarely exceed three or four the farmer finding..

    • Richard Trinick is most likely the first publican of the "Union Inn" now named "The Fortescue" in Union Street Salcombe.

      His Son William took on the role when Richard passed away.
