Description: Regarding Susanna Dymond Quick (I2894) the information I have is:-
1820 Susannah was born Hallsands, Stokenham parish - she was her parents eldest child. In the baptism records her father John Quick, was described as a husbandman. Her mother was Clara Dimond.
1822 Her brother, James Quick was born and baptised.
1823 Her sister Mary born and baptised
Her father John Quick asked for parish relief to help support his wife and chidren. Her father had to swear a statement in front of local JP.
Settlement Exam (doc at Devon Record office, lots of detail about John Quick's earlier life at South Brent, his apprenticeship, during which time who paid for his clothes etc) Now Stokenham magistrates decided he was the responsibility of Malborough parish - John never received support from Stokenham. Probably his wife's family helped out as best they could - they were fishermen, living at Beesands and some at Hallsands.
1825 Her sister Elizabeth was born and baptised at Stokenham.
Her father with several of her uncles were caught on the cliffs making signals to smuggling boats. Susannah was 6yrs when her father and the others were arrested and taken to Exeter Jail.
27 March 1826 Her father and other family members appeared at Devon Assizes - they were found guilty and committed under warrant from the Kings Bench for making signals to Persons on board a smuggling vessel. For want of sureties to appear at Westminster the first day of Easter Term. Held in Exeter jail. (The court order was imprisonment until they paid a fine of ?22-8-0. It is not clear what happened but John was soon back home and another baby was on the way!).
1827 Susannah's father was served a Removal Order (document is at Devon Record office) He and his wife and 5 children were to go to Malborough parish - but still the family stayed in Stokenham
1829 John Quick jnr was the 6th and last child to be recorded as baptised at Stokenham.
Aged about 10yrs, Susannah and her parents and siblings eventually found their way to Malborough where they lived in the Alms House by the church.
Susannah's parents had several more children but by now Susannah would have been working on local farms, possibly even sleeping away from the family home.
