Notes - William Cornish (b.1816) married Jane Cleveley (who was under 21 years of age) the daughter of Isaac Cleveley, a fisherman of Inner Hope. It is noted that both William and his father were also, at that time living at Inner Hope. He signed the register but she only made her mark. The witnesses were her brother and sister Nathaniel and Susan Cleveley. Five months after the birth of his son (17 Aug 1846), he was drowned whilst on a fishing trip in Bigbury Bay . His widow re-married, three years later to one John Hambling (sic Hamlyn) who was a mariner operating out of Hope and whose father, John, ran the local pub.
A memorial slab is be found in Malborough church, just forward of the choir stalls. It is not clear if his body was recovered and buried or was, literally, lost at sea.
